The teaching of literature is not just a box to check off. It is the gateway to the world of literature, connecting students to its relevance in everyday life. I expose students to classic and contemporary fiction, short stories, and poetry to help them appreciate the significance and purpose of the works we study while encouraging them to form their own perspectives. This approach allows students to explore the authors' backgrounds and cultures, nurturing their critical thinking. Students learn the importance and intent of the works we study, the authors' background and culture, and, most importantly, they are encouraged to form their own opinions of the works included. All English LIterature classes include both reading and composition in order to satisfy a High School credit.
We will study each book or collection of poetry over several weeks through lectures, presentations, reading aloud, and discussions . Classes may also have interactive fun; perhaps afternoon tea while reading Jane Austen or gumbo while studying Mark Twain!
I will give homework, typically short essay answers or complete essays, and give a test for each work studied. Each class will have a final exam or final project.
Students will keep a Vocabulary Log as they encounter new words and terms that we will discuss in class. Many of these words will be part of the standard SAT vocabulary.
American, British, and World literature classes will briefly review essential literature components and elements in the Introduction to Literature class.
I will discuss the booklist with the parent prior to class, so that I do not repeat works that the student may have already read at home.
Students must purchase printed, digital, or audio versions of the books in each class.
All literature classes include both a reading and composition element to satisfy a full-year credit for English. In my literature classes, the goal is not just to check off a list of books read but to inspire a deep connection with literature and poetry. Students will explore timeless classics and modern works, delving into the authors' backgrounds and the cultural significance of the texts. Most importantly, they are encouraged to form their own interpretations and opinions.
Our in-depth study of each book or poetry collection will be filled with engaging activities, discussions, and interactive experiences. Whether it's sipping afternoon tea while immersed in Jane Austen or savoring gumbo while unraveling the world of Mark Twain, the learning experience will be enriching and fun.
I believe in the power of written expression, which is why I assign thought-provoking essays and tests for every work we study. Additionally, students will expand their vocabulary and language skills as they encounter new words and terms, many of which are essential for standardized tests like the SAT.
Furthermore, I ensure that students will receive a thorough understanding of American, British, and World literature, laying a solid foundation in the Introduction to Literature class, while also avoiding redundancy by coordinating with parents on the booklist.
Students may use printed, digital, or even audio versions of the required books. I will provide any poetry on the reading list.
Typically, High School students begin literature studies with Introduction to Literature followed by any of the three remaining classes.
